Approaches in Psychology

We covered the main approaches to psychology in class. If you want more information on some of those approaches you might check out the resources below.

For some insight into B.F. Skinner’s view on free will and behaviorism, you can read from one of his landmark books, Beyond Freedom and Dignity. Just click here for an online version.

As we discussed in class, the humanistic perspective gives a fresh alternative to behaviorism. For some more background information on the history of humanistic psychology and the concepts of that approach just click here. You can also explore the Resources on that site for additional materials.

For more information on the evolutionary approach to psychology just click here. You will find an explanation and excellent background information on this approach.

For practice identifying the various perspectives in psychology please click here. You will find a quiz where you can test your knowledge.

To get a more personal view of positive psychology I have a talk given by Martin Seligman, one of the founders of the Positive psychology movement. He describes why it is so important that we turn our attention from just treating problems and diseases to helping all people improve themselves and their lives.
